'A truth in art is that whose contradictory is also true.’ (Oscar Wilde)

FAKE FISH

A Near-Future Novel

In a world in which images are more persuasive than memories, a single manipulated fragment can tip everything off balance.

When a fake video goes viral and destroys a filmmaker's reputation, film student Martin becomes entangled in a web of guilt and silence. As public outrage grows, he tries to downplay his role and salvage his relationship with Eveline. But the longer he evades the truth, the bigger the distance between them.

What begins as a personal crisis develops into a rupture that impacts more than two lovers. Twenty years later, a new generation lives in a society that has radically eradicated disinformation. Stories are controlled. Fiction is forbidden. Yet the human longing for imagination cannot be suppressed, any more than the past can be erased.

Fake Fish is a compelling near-future novel about love and responsibility, about parents and children, about the desire to control one’s own story and the price paid for doing so.

The English-language version of this timely book was published in the United Kingdom in 2024 by the literary press Sparsile Books. The novel was selected as a Debut Showcase title for Scotland’s Book Week.

Publisher: Sparsile Books Ltd (14 Nov. 2024), Language‏: English, Paperback: 304 pages, ISBN-10: 1914399609, ISBN-13: 978-1914399602

Responses to Fake Fish

Truth with a twist: Literary debut plays with fact and fiction (...) Weusten's novel is a real page-turner, albeit one that sticks in the mind once you've finished."

– The Observant

Josje’s writing invites us into layered worlds where the lines between truth and fiction blur.  (...) Her rapid-paced storytelling keeps us on our toes and swiftly turning every page.

– Low Hanging Fruit Literary and Visual Arts Magazine

I simply had to continue reading. Out of curiosity for the fate of the intriguing characters, for the sharp observations, the subtle irony, and most definitely for its commanding writing style.

– Prof Jan de Roder, professor of literature and past jury member of the Constantijn Huygens Prize and the PC Hooftprize)

This is a great book, dealing with a dystopian future where ‘fake news’ has resulted in an authoritarian crackdown on literature, music, visual arts and imagination. It’s beautifully written and cleverly structured. The characters are really relatable.

– Professor of Digital Cultures Prof Dr Sally Wyatt

An ingenious, imaginative and timely novel

– Prof Em Dr Wiel Kusters, professor of literature,  writer, and poet

 *****

This book urges readers to think about fiction and imagination – and how these might be abused,

– Eline van der Boog, literary critic and fiction editor

ABOUT JOSJE WEUSTEN

Josje Weusten (Heerlen, 1980) is a Dutch writer who has lived in Belgium for nearly twenty years. She writes mostly in English.

In her fiction and poetry, Weusten explores the tension between truth, identity, and imagination. She draws inspiration from both English-language and Dutch literature; among her principal influences are Ian McEwan, Margaret Atwood, Elizabeth Bishop, J.M. Coetzee, Renate Dorrestein, and Cees Nooteboom.

Her work is characterised by a refusal to present singular truths and by a deliberate juxtaposition of conflicting perspectives. In her fiction, she tends to combine literary narrative traditions with dystopian elements.

In her poetry and autofictional prose, she examines the fragmenting impact of trauma on memory and the interplay between inner experience and everyday objects.

After completing a PhD in Literary Studies and training at the Faber Academy in London, Weusten combines her writing career with her work as a lecturer in literature and creative writing at Maastricht University.

Her fiction, poetry, and essays appear regularly in international literary journals, including Merion West, Burningword Literary Journal, Bookends Review, Litbreak Magazine, and The Brussels Times Magazine. Her English-language debut novel, Fake Fish, was published in 2024 by Sparsile Books (Glasgow) and was selected as a Debut Showcase of Scotland’s Book Week. In 2024, he was featured as a showcase author in the American journal Low Hanging Fruit Magazine. In 2025, she won the Belgian Writefest Short Story Competition.

A Dutch translation of the novel Fake Fish will be released in 2026 as Valse Waarheden.

Josje Weusten is represented by the literary agency Viv Loves Film Literary and Entertainment Company (Brighton, UK).

SHORT FICTION & POETRY

Josje Weusten’s short stories span the genres of contemporary fiction and dystopian fiction. She explores how personal experiences, memories, and identity are shaped by both inner processes and social circumstances. In a clear, precise style, she reveals the vulnerability of human relationships. At times, reality subtly shifts toward the uncanny or dystopian, yet human experience is always at the core of her fiction. With her short story 'A Day by the River', she won the Belgian Writefest Short Story Competition in 2025.

Her poetry explores similar themes to her shorter fiction. They are specifically focused on the fragmenting impact of loss and family history on memory and identity. Weusten’s poems are sensory, drawing their power from what is suggested rather than explicitly stated. Everyday objects and interiors function as carriers of memory and emotional complexity.

Josje Weusten is currently working on a collection of short stories (At High Shutter Speed) and a poetry collection (A Solitary Game of Tag).

Josje Weusten handles poetry with a heavy heart and light lungs. (...) I love [her] subtle, poingnant, hauting style of poetry."

 – Austin Allen James, dichter, kunstenaar & redacteur poëzie Merion West.

COFFEE

by Josje Weusten, first published in Bookends Review

As she sat
bent over,
in the least-smudged chair of my garden set,
my sister told of
a neighbour who styled his garden
—its stubborn hedges and out-of-average-reach trees—
with hair tweezers and nail clippers (for feet).

As she drank
her coffee,
cross clover continued to unroot the grass,
and drunk wasps circled ground-struck apricots,
while unimpeachable ivy
succeeded in suffocating the “permanent” plants
in the borders—green nooses left unseen.

As my eyes
grazed over
the playfully growing decay, I knew
she wasn’t talking about my nature
and though I already had my answer, I still asked
my sister—
‘You think the garden has something to say[?]’

Short Story Installation 'A Day by the River'

The story installation ‘A Day by the River’ is the result of a collaboration with installation artist Tim Scheffer for the 'Art Exhibition: Influent – Exploring Our Shifting Relationship with Water'.

The installation connects my dystopian story 'A Day by the River' to a place to sit and listen on an upcycled river bench. The story describes a future in which the Scottish river Clyde has dried up, and a grandmother and child try to get through the day without the river.

ESSAYS

Next to poetry and fiction, Josje Weusten writes essays on literature and creative writing, in which she connects academic insights with her personal experiences as an author and creative writing teacher. Her reflections are marked by an accessible, contemplative tone and a strong engagement with the craft of writing.

Since 2024, Josje has been a regular contributor to The Independent Publishing Magazine, which was named by Reedsy as one of the fifty most important online resources for creative writing worldwide in 2025.

In 2025, she edited the volume Beroering door verbeelding. Bijdragen over literatuur, verbeelding en vrijheid, published by Maastricht University Press. This collection of essays, photographs, and poems in Dutch and English explores literature, imagination, and freedom. It offers a unique and inviting mix of styles and pushes the boundaries of academic form by combining literary, artistic, and personal genres with scholarly modes of argument and presentation. As such, the volume addresses questions about the nature of literature, creative writing, and academic education, and perhaps most importantly, about the freedom of art and academia.

Weusten's own English contribution to the volume is an academic essay on the importance of doodling and drawing for creative writing.

The book was conceived and published as a Liber Amicorum on the occasion of Dr Jan de Roder’s retirement, and is available as open access.

SCHOLARLY BOOKS

In this book, researchers share personal, surprising, and sometimes moving stories about their work. It demonstrates that there is another way of doing research—one that makes room for emotions, confusion, humour, doubt, imagination, and chance encounters. The collection was originally written and published in English under the title The Stories We Tell, edited by Elsje Fourie and Christin Hoene.

The Dutch translation was produced by Josje Weusten, who beautifully preserves the literary tone and personal style of the authors.

The book is published by Maastricht University Press and is available as open access.

De idylle voorbij (Beyond the Ideal) by Josje Weusten examines how the social ideal of motherhood is represented in Dutch literature from 1980 to 2010. This dissertation brings together literary-sociological research and close readings of novels in an innovative way, thereby deepening our understanding of the social function of literature. Among the works she analyses are De reis naar het kind by Vonne van der Meer and Een hart van steen by Renate Dorrestein.

The book is available as open access.

CREATIVE WRITING WORKSHOPS & COURSES

Josje Weusten has been teaching creative writing and cultural and literary theory at Maastricht University for nearly twenty years.

She teaches from the conviction that developing creative writing skills leads to deeper understanding of literature and vice versa. In her courses and workshops, she therefore combines practical writing exercises with theoretical insights. She received one of the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences Teaching Awards in 2021.

Students at Maastricht University can take creative writing courses with her at University College Maastricht.

In addition, she organizes the biennial Maastricht University Creative Writing Summer School, which is open to anyone who wishes to write in English.

She also organises writing workshops for other universities, museums, bookshops, and secondary schools. These workshops are offered in Dutch, English, or in bilingual formats.

What Former Students Have to Say

Josje is not only a talented writer, but a wonderful teacher who goes above and beyond when it comes to fostering the creativity of her students.

Fantastic!

I think it is a great course for everybody who is interested in pursuing a career in writing

Josje was a great teacher, always respectful and encouraging towards everyone.

A perfect balance between theory and practice

Each day was curated carefully, making use of helpful writing prompts or exercises. The structure of the course's content was very coherent, starting with the topic of inspiration and ending with insights on how to edit and publish your work.

Josje was very friendly and approachable. In my particular case, she approached me when she saw me struggling and tried to help me.

The course materials were very well chosen.

Josje was very knowledgeable in the course topics, and approachable.
